11/365 - Bokeh

I've been learning about bokeh lately, and I thought with Christmas coming, it would be a good time to practice the technique.

For those non-photography geeks, bokeh is a technique used typically on the background of the photo, that creates a more interesting back drop. There are many article-length descriptions on the internet, but from what I gather, it's basically creating an aesthetically pleasing blur - usually highlighting the lighter sections of the photo. I wont get too technical, but it's pretty cool.

This is my Christmas tree.

10/365 - Beautiful Destruction

Behind my house is a beautiful woods and a sand pit. Unfortunately, they're clearing some trees from an area in those woods. Today while out looking for a Christmas tree, I took this photo of the newly created clearing.

9/365 - Birds of a Feather...

...are flocking outside.

Took some bird photos today. I set up a few bird feeders outside my living-room window,  and I've been waiting for birds to come. They finally came!

I love all of these, so I've got a few extra bonuses today.

8/365 - Woodlands

Having time off from work is like living in a time warp. I have 10 days off and I thought I'd spend the whole time cleaning the house, creating beautiful artwork, doing 1000 hours of yoga - generally waking up at 7am every day and spending every waking moment bettering my life, and enthusiastically too! I have done all those things (maybe only about 3 hours of yoga), but I've also don't a lot of mindless bullshit, like staring at Breaking Bad on Netflix until 3am. Then sleeping until 11.

Here's a wood pile. I took a bunch of different photos of this wood pile, and about the first 10 were a long view of the whole stack from one end. Then I realized that I've taken that same photo a million ties before, of other things. Buildings, fences, buoys hanging on the side of an ocean house. The whole reason I started this blog in the first place was to push myself. As a photographer and as a person. It's not a photo that will blow anyone's mind, or end up in National Geographic - but it's a step towards expanding my portfolio.

7/365 - Snow Fields

Today I took a walk in the woods, and came to a field. I had planned on taking some self portraits there, but it was way too cold for what I was thinking. So I ended up doing some nature shots instead.

Bonus photo! I liked both of these and really couldn't decide, so you're getting both!

6/365 - Christmas Party

The restaurant I work at had their Christmas party this week. I work as a bartender. This is one of the lights.

5/365 - Selfie

The past few days have been busy! My cat had been feeling sick for a few days so I brought her to the vet, where they decided to do an x-ray. Then we found out she needed emergency surgery on her stomach to remove a foreign object. She's now lying on the couch resting and starting to feel better, besides the cone of shame that she has to wear until her stitches come out in a week or so. She's not psyched, but she'll be back to her normal, trouble causing self in no time.

Today's photo is the first "selfie" of the project.

4/365 - Snow Man and Snow Girl

It snowed about 8 inches yesterday, leaving a beautiful white blanket over everything. Josh and I took advantage of the beauty, and the rare day off together, to go outside and play/take photos!

I took a ton of photos of the snow, things covered in snow, Josh playing in the snow, but the one I liked the best was just a simple self timer portrait.

Aren't we cute? :)

Bonus photo! Josh took this photo of Apples and I after we played in the snow. He's great at photos!

3/365 - Mouse Hunt

Okay, I know what you're thinking. It's only day 3 and we already have 2 cat photos...of the same cat. That being said, I couldn't resist because she's adorable. That, and I got home from work past midnight and I didn't have anything else to take a photo of.

SO, this is yesterday's photo. My cat, Apples, diligently doing her share of the housework. In this photo she is doing what she does every night, she's waiting for a mouse. If she finds one, she'll bring it into the bedroom where I lay asleep, and happily let it go...alive. She's a good little mouser.

2/365 - Steam Party

It's day two of my year long project, and I have some pool steam to share with you.

This was taken at my work when I saw the sunlight reflecting perfectly on the outdoor pool. It may be below freezing outside, but the pool is heated, and open all year long - which makes for great steam photos!

2/365

It's a weird photo, I know. I like how the focus is on the ground near the leaf, and how the steam is rising into the sun in the background, and I love how the sun is making a purple kind of reflection on the wet ground. I'd love to try the same photo around sunset.

In other news, I rented a fisheye lens for NYC and I'm picking it up in 2 weeks from today...which also means that New Years Eve is right around the corner!

1/365 - The Beginning of a Year

This is the very first post of what will be my 365 day photography project!

I have always had an interest in photography, but it wasn't until a few months ago that I started really exploring it on my own. I wanted to start this blog as a way to share my photos with the world, but also as a way to track my progress and look back on my photos.

The plan is to take and share a new photo every day, for a year. Here we go!

Day 1/365

I couldn't decide what to use for the first photo, so I chose two. The first one is my cat, Apples. I thought it would be a fitting first photo because she's my best bud, she's adorable, and I have an overall unhealthy obsession with hanging out with my cat. Everybody likes cats. This wont be the last photo of Apples.

This next photo is a shot of a menorah, taken from my home a few days ago (but I didn't edit it until today, so it counts). This was my first holiday season celebrating Hanukkah. My (Jewish) boyfriend and I have been together for a while, but this is the first year that we decided to not only have a Christmas tree, but also to light a Menorah, for each day of Hanukkah - why not?

It took me about 20 shots to get the focus on the center wick, with the flames just right.
